This is not a list for a pro crafter. Or even semi-pro. So if you fall into one of those two categories, stop scoffing at my list. I'm well aware of the necessity of a self healing cutting mat and E-6000 for your level of crafting, and I would definitely include those items on a must-have list for your group. The list I've included below instead rounds up basic supplies needed to get the basic mom/amateur crafter (like me) through the impromptu weekend toddler craft project.
Aside from scissors, glue, ruler and tape, which are all likely in supply at your place anyway (because you'll need those pretty much all the time), you'll find that the below listed supplies will carry you a long way on the toddler arts and crafts front. All of these items are pretty inexpensive, so it'll be cheap and easy to build up your stash!

1. Paper punch. You'll be surprised at how often you will use these babies. I have a small hole punch and a 2" paper punch.
2. Mod Podge. This can be used as a glue, sealer and finish for fun paper or fabric applications. It comes in many finishes. I keep both matte and sparkle on hand. Lots of applications for this stuff. I mean, tons and tons. Check some out here.
3. Pipe cleaners. Come in packs of unbelievably ridiculous quantity and in lots of colors. You can pick these up for less than $2 per pack.
4. Paper plates. For everything from masks to rainbows or streamers to animal/bug creations. You will always use these. Also less than $2 per pack.
5. Cotton balls. Think bunny tails, clouds, snowmen and sheep, and lots more! Also great for little fingers to dab paint on paper.
6. Cardboard. Instead of throwing out all of those cardboard boxes, save them! You can always break them down flat for easier storage. When you need it, you'll have a supply to pull from. For any project, you can cut to size. For great cardboard craft ideas, click here.
7. Craft paint. Comes in 2 oz. bottles for around $1 (or less) a piece. Start with a couple in some basic/fav colors to have on hand for quick and easy crafting. Oh, and it goes without saying that you'll need a paint brush, too.
8. Tissue paper. This is another one that you can buy in a bulk pack in assorted colors for pretty cheap. Used to make paper flowers, faux stained glass projects, delicate leaves or even animal faces.
9. Twine or yarn. You'll use it all.the.time. Get some. The end.
10. Ribbon. Save every bit you ever get your little hands on, and scour the dollar bins at places like Target and Michaels. Any color, any pattern. Great for embellishing a project; adding a loop to a picture, painting, or project; creating bows; or for times when you want something with a little more pizzazz than twine.
11. Hot glue gun. Basically, this is the duct tape of the craft world. It's essential to your craft supply. You'll be so glad you have this on hand. It can attach an object to pretty much any surface, including metal and glass, in about a minute. Oh, and it dries clear. Not for little helpers...this thing gets HOT! You'll need a pack of glue sticks to go along with it.
12. Mounting tape. I typically use Scotch brand, but 3M makes a good one, too. This stuff is the best! Mount pictures, posters, signs and tons more. I've used it to secure embellishments to both fabric and paper when I've needed a quick fix. I've also used it during the holidays to hold down our stocking hangers to the fireplace mantel (so that when the stockings were full, the hangers didn't tip over). Most recently, I used it to secure an electrical cord to a wall during the temporary set up for Ella's birthday party. So handy! Not to mention, it can go places a hot glue gun just can't.
13. A heavy weight paper, like card stock or scrapbook paper. I keep both white card stock and assorted scrapbook paper on hand. You'll be able to do some pretty crafty projects (like this or this) with a heavy weight paper, and you'll even be able to print your own labels, tags and cards!
14. White spray paint. Finish off projects, or repurpose or refresh something you already have around with just a few sprays of good old white paint. For example, create a cute vase from an old soup can by cleaning it up, spraying it white, adding a little ribbon or twine (maybe even a little band of pretty scrapbook paper) to dress up a table. I usually pick up the gloss versus the matte because it gives everything a nice finish.
15. Construction paper. We all know this one, right? Good for more than just paper chains, this all purpose paper craft staple will be your go-to for all occasions, all seasons. Here's a quick peek at just some of the possibilities with construction paper crafts.
And because I can't just stop there, I've included a couple of bonus items to add to your list:
* Googly eyes. Just trust me. They come in small bags of assorted sized eyes. Get that one. The kind that are self adhesive are sometimes convenient so that you don't have to glue them on.
* Coffee filters. Don't believe me? Look at the cool ideas here and here. And that's just for starters. Oodles of oohs and ahhs for a couple of bucks.
Your arsenal should be pretty well stocked if these items are included in your craft stash. You'll be able to tackle just about any basic craft project that comes your way! Now you can roll up your sleeves and feel prepared as you look to get crafty with your kids. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
