As we await the next step in our kitchen project (which at this point will definitely be after the holidays), we are tackling small to-do's when we can get to them. It seems the contractor for our countertops is held up until after the holidays with other orders...and we can't put in the backsplash tile until the countertops are in or even build out the wall until we have a counter to fit around the sink. But, really, that's okay with us because having our kitchen involved in demo and reno at this point is just too close to crunch time. After the holidays works!
So, I went to work in the never-seems-to-be-finished book nook. Hey, it's getting there, it's getting there. All I have left to do is upholster the bench, do some potato stamping, hang a curtain and a few pics and DONE. I have no idea why it has taken me so long to finish this one up, other than it's easy to overlook because of its location. Out of sight, out of mind.

We also decided to hang our homemade shelving unit horizontally in the play room. Whoa, what a difference that made! We were able to pull all of the kids movies out of their reach, and it filled the space there nicely. Not too shabby for a few bucks of material!
I purchased a few fruit crates wholesale a couple of years ago in order to have a shelving unit for our guest room. I didn't want anything big, just a small something to hold a few books. After receiving the crates, we lined them up, tacked them together with some nails and braced each join on the backside with a plate, similar to this one. I then white washed the whole thing and placed it vertically in one corner of the room, and it seemed to work well. I think I paid less than $20 bucks for all 5 crates.
It was fun to repurpose it in the play room and give it new life. Turning it horizontally and securing it to the wall with some anchors did the job! The slats in the crates even mimic the detail in the bead board we have going around the bottom half of the room. Bonus!

Now, what can I tweak next? Let's see...
